Context


Research indicates that Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a key determinant of success in life— far more than IQ.

It is not surprising to see people who have not been academically brilliant achieve greater success than those who were. Instinctively, we follow people who share our concern. These are the people who lead.

As we rise in organizations individual contributions merit lesser significance than the ability to work with superiors, peers, subordinates and various other stakeholders to get the best results. People skills are the primary requierment for success in such jobs. But to know and understand others we must know ourselves first. Thus, the journey of emotional intelligence commences with knowing our emotions, realizing the impact of our emotions on our thinking and actions, understanding others emotions and managing our emotions in order to achieve superior collective results.

The Emotionally Intelligent Leader is able to connect individual aspirations to the organizational aspirations and thus help find meaning in work. The result is continuous improvement in organizational performance and employee engagement thru intrinsic job satisfaction. In this era of rapid change and high competition the Manager must be an Emotionally Intelligent Leader for continued organizational success.

Hindustan Petroleum has tried to create an environment that fosters Emotionally Intelligent leadership. Its journey in building an Emotionally Intelligent organization commenced with training of its front line leaders in the concepts and providing them opportunities to put them into practice. In an era of intense competition we realized that people would take risks and innovate only in a safe and happy environment.
